CPR Tips: Learn How To Save a Life

Hands-only CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is a technique that focuses on chest compressions without the need for rescue breaths. It is an effective way to assist someone experiencing cardiac arrest. Here are the steps for hands-only CPR:

  1. Check for Responsiveness:

    • Shake the person and shout, "Are you okay?"

    • If there is no response, the person is not breathing normally, or only gasping, call for emergency help immediately (dial 911 or your local emergency number).

  2. Position the Person:

    • Place the person on their back on a firm surface.

    • Ensure the person is lying on a hard, flat surface.

  3. Expose the Chest:

    • Remove any clothing covering the person's chest.

  4. Hand Placement:

    • Kneel down beside the person.

    • Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person's chest, just below the nipple line.

  5. Interlock Fingers:

    • Place your other hand on top of the first, interlocking your fingers.

  6. Maintain Straight Arms:

    • Keep your elbows straight and position your shoulders directly over your hands.

  7. Perform Chest Compressions:

    • Use your upper body weight to push hard and fast (at least 2 inches deep and at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute).

    • Allow the chest to fully recoil between compressions.

    • Continue chest compressions until professional help arrives or the person starts breathing on their own.

  8. Minimize Interruptions:

    • Try to minimize interruptions in chest compressions. Consistent compressions are crucial for blood circulation.

  9. Assist with Automated External Defibrillator (AED):

    • If an AED is available, turn it on and follow the voice prompts. Apply the pads as instructed.

  10. Continue CPR Until Professional Help Arrives:

    • Continue chest compressions until professional medical help arrives and takes over.

Remember, hands-only CPR is designed for use by bystanders until professional help arrives. If you are trained in conventional CPR with rescue breaths, and you are comfortable doing so, you can incorporate rescue breaths into the CPR process. However, hands-only CPR is a valuable and easy-to-learn skill that can save lives in emergencies.
